What to do with Old Fish Hooks: a Fish Hook Necklace
For all fishing enthusiasts out there if you have old rusty fish hooks or hooks that don’t fit in fish hook size charts, why don’t you turn that fish hook into a fish hook necklace? A fish hook necklace is a good accessory especially to those who are into fishing and would make a good gift for fishing enthusiasts.
There are a lot of designs for fish hook necklaces, and luckily you don’t need expensive tools or materials to make one. Most of the equipment needed could be found in your home and the materials are usually inexpensive.
A precaution though before making your own fish hook necklace. Since fish hooks are sharp and meant to pierce flesh, make sure you file off the barbs as it could pierce your own flesh as well. Having a fish hook stuck on your bleeding neck is not a good site to see and it could leave a very bad scar on you. Better to file off the sharp points than get wounded and pierced by it.
Another thing is that if you are recycling a rusty fish hooks into a fish hook necklace make sure you clean off all the rust that could be cleaned and apply a coating of paint to it so that the rust would not come back again. Again rust could cause tetanus and infection and even though shots for it are available, it is still better to stay safe.
There are two types of fish hook necklaces that could be commonly seen. One is with a single hook that is threaded into a satin band or a chain necklace and the other is the one composed of entirely of a lot of fish hooks. The first one is easier to make since it is requires only threading the hook into a necklace while the second one would be more difficult since there would be more tools and skills involved in creating one.
To create a single fish hook necklace, you need to have a fish hook, a satin thread or chain necklace, eyelets or small metal rings similar to those on key chains, pliers, and scissors. To begin make sure that the fish hook does not contain any sharp points or barbs anymore or if you want to maintain that feature just file it so that it won’t be sharp. With the pliers use one of the metal eyelets or rings on the eye of the fish hook or if you are using a fishing line to fasten it on the necklace, just use any fish hook knot to secure it in place. Thread the hook into the satin cord or chain then measure it around your neck. Cut off any excess parts of the necklace so that it would fit you well. Seal off the ends and that’s it you have your own fish hook necklace.
The next is the multiple fish hook necklace, wherein you need a lot of fish hooks, some beads (optional) and fliers. Again make sure you remove the sharp points and barbs of a fish hook by filing it off. Add some beads if you want on the fish hooks before you connect them. Then connect the fish hooks by threading one into the eye of the other until it is long enough to go around your neck. Seal off each end by bending it using pliers. That’s it now you have your own multiple fish hook necklace.
This necklace is great to wear when going to fish hook parks to show how much of a fishing enthusiast you are. If you are not surely giving this to one who is, will make that person really happy. Wear it or give it, it is up to you on what you would do with a fish hook necklace.
