Swallowing the Fish Hook
Posted on: June 18, 2011
Adler is an Austrian psychologist and he likes fishing very much. One day when he goes fishing with his friends, he discovers an interesting phenomenon: when the fish bites the hook, it will try its best to struggle due to the stabbing pain. However, the more it struggles, the more pain the fish will have. And it becomes harder for the fish to get rid of the hook. Even if the fish succeeds to escape, the fishing hook will stay in the fish's mouth. So it is common that there are two hooks in the mouth of one fish.
Most of us will consider the fish as foolish, but Adler puts forward a similar mental concept and he names it as "the phenomenon of swallowing the fish hook".
Everyone will have his own mistakes and sometimes these mistakes are just like the fish hooks in our life. When we bite these fish hooks carelessly, we will take them deeply into our heart. What is worse, we will keep struggling to get rid of the painful experience. No matter how hard we try however, we can't just make the way out. It is likely that we will encounter the same mistakes again, and then the new round of struggling begins, with the old ones still staying in our mind. Such kind of psychological activity is called" the phenomenon of swallowing the fish hook".
The psychological phenomenon fails to make people deal with their mistakes in a proper and active way. It will also lead people to the tendency of self-accusation and covering their mistakes. As a result, the duplicate hurting is unavoidable and indelible. Actually every one of us may have such experiences, and we just are not aware of it and do not want to admit it.
"The phenomenon of swallowing the fish hook" is caused by the extreme tension of the nerves. When we have problems dealing with our life, we will activate the shadow lying in our inner unconsciousness to make mistakes. And in most cases, the shadow takes its form via the various mistakes we make. From the perspective of psychology, every mistake, despite of its coincidence and unexpectedness, has its spontaneity and inevitability.
We can not totally be free from mistakes, shames and disappointment. However, there is something we can do to avoid these things ruining and changing the humanity. That is also the very purpose of avoiding the appearing of mental diseases.
For our ordinary people, we should learn from these tiny things to adjust ourselves to the various situations in life. We just can not easily break down in the face of pressure and pains. Sometimes, learn to give up is also an effective way to keep on going. Just take it easy, and then you can find out that life is full of sunshine and hope.
So, why not going on a hiking if you feel you can not bear the pressure any more? To attend a concert is a good choice if you feel life is boring and colorless. Do remember to give your family or your dear friends a call with you cell phone when you need someone to share your sadness.
